At the beginningof each year, I like to reflect on what I’ve achieved over the previous 12 months. But even more so, I like getting pumped for the new year. I’m always excited about new adventures and every new year is an open door that steps right into that realm of new opportunities.
Over the last few years, I’ve stepped away from creating lists of ‘normal’ single goal new year resolutions. You probably know the ones: Watch less TV, eat healthy, read more, party harder, etc. I’m not a huge fan of lists and so I started making resolutions that worked better for the way I think (A distractive combination of the thinking styles defined by Harrison and Bramson in the book The Art of Thinking). My resolutions aren’t targeted to a single goal and they keep rolling on year after year. One of my favourites has been ‘Get farming‘ which focuses on on growing people and ideas all the way to harvest.
2015 kicks off my resolution to Redefine the Parameters of Possible. We’re taught that the limits of what we can do have already been defined. I shared this resolution with someone and their reply was basically “We can scientifically prove what we can and can’t do”. Too True… But science continues to find doors to new possibilities every single day!
The earth has a gravitational pull of ~9.8 m/s2. Its what keeps us on the ground, a pretty awesome, scientifically proven fact. Even more awesome-er? The same science has also enabled us to create a zero gravity environment within our own atmosphere using parabolas in flight. Science is all about redefining the parameters of possible.
The world and the people around us will more often give reason as to why you can’t do something. I dont like to admit that theres been times that I’ve been one of those people. Its easier to see why something cant be done than to find a way to make it happen.
We generally know what our limits are and if youre like me, working in those defined limits is a normal part of life. If youve been following my blog, you would have seen that 3 months ago, I started running. At first, my possible was 5km in 30 minutes, I set my goal to 25. Im now running 5km in under 20 minutes. Im not a pro runner, just a bloke that committed to running 5 days a week for 3 months.
My passion in life is to honour God and commit to the desires that hes put on my heart. The more I strive towards that goal, the more I realise that I need to redefine my parameters of possible to reflect the limits of God. When the angel Gabriel appears to Mary, he tells her that the impossible is about to happen then sums it up with For nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:27).
Have you ever read that verse and been encouraged? If your desires are inspired by Christ, if youre obedient to his plans, you will always have the assurance that you can do everything through Him, who gives you strength (Philippians 4 13).
In 2015, I challenge you to redefine the parameters of your possible. It’s hard to knowknow how fast you can run until you start running. Want to know thelimits of life? Trust in a limitless God!
Be blessed, encouraged and renewed as you kick off 2015.
